As with dry skin or with adult acne and dehydration issues, learning how to deal with the rough skin and calluses on your body can really be a pain of trial and error during the winter months.
These rough conditions are actually designed to protect your skin from friction, pressure, and rubbing. It makes sense that the roughness would happen at the places that hold you up and help you keep your balance. The joints especially show signs of hard work -- your elbows, knuckles, knees, ankles, heels and the balls of your feet. However, despite the benefit, this roughness and dryness often feels like your skin has gone haywire and usually doesn't feel very comfortable.
It may seem that since dryness is problem, the solution must involve intense, thick moisturizers. This doesn't take care of the problem at all, since the roughness you're dealing with is caused by extreme dead skin cell build-up. The fact that the skin is dehydrated can be addressed after dealing with the dead skin. When it comes to roughness on your elbows and knees, your pores can become clogged with waxy ingredients from many drugstore body lotions, which can result in bumpiness in addition to the rough, dry skin.
The most effective solution for getting rid of rough skin is to implement a simple exfoliation routine every time you shower. The tools you need for the two-step routine for soft, smooth skin are: exfoliating gloves and an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) body lotion.
- 1. Wash with a moisturizing body wash (that doesn't contain any artificial dyes or fragrance) using exfoliating gloves. You can also use a foot file to get rid of callouses on your heels and the balls of your feet.
- 2. After gently drying off, apply the AHA lotion to any affected areas. Not only will the AHA help with the callouses, it will also help get rid of some of the darkening of the skin around these rough areas.
You can sometimes use a light buffing block (typically used for manicures) or a soft emery board to file away extreme roughness from elbows and knees. But, you should be careful! If not paying attention, you can really scratch yourself and won’t realize this until it’s too late.
