Approaching Anti-Aging For the Acne-Prone: Part 2

Last week, I talked about the issue of Adult Acne not being addressed enough by the myriad of anti-aging and anti-acne skincare products that are currently available on the market.

We are seeing a little about it being mentioned here and there, but the ads for just about every product line that's supposed to address adults and not just teens still feature pictures of women in their 20s. But what about those of us 30-, 40- and 50-somethings? I believe women in these age groups are largely being ignored.

Win-Win!

The amazing thing is, the very ingredients that address the skin damage that results in premature aging can also address acne issues for the adult in her 30s, 40s and 50s!

A wrinkle forms when damage from sun, stress, and inflammatory foods like sugar and white flour destroys the proteins that hold the skin up and keep it plumped out. The main ingredients that repair and prevent this damage are shielding, anti-inflammatory antioxidants, cell-building peptides, damaged-cell removing alpha hydroxy acids, and protective sunscreen.

Well, guess what? Antioxidants prevent blackheads from turning dark, and pores from getting inflamed; Peptides rebuild pore linings so they can stop being so sensitive every time there's an oil rush from hormonal events like menstruation and birth control changes; Alpha and beta hydroxy acids exfoliate from inside pores so they flow better so impactions don't form and cause congestion; Sunscreen that is non-clogging and hydrating prevents overall inflammation and keeps the skin healthy. No lubrication, no clogging, no drying necessary!

Morning

  1. Wash with a cleanser that rinses easily and doesn't make the skin tight after drying off.
  2. Tone with an alcohol-free spray toner that balances the skin's acidity level while keeping it soothed and hydrated.
  3. Repair with a serum containing antioxidants and peptides.
  4. Prevent pore congestion throughout the day and whisk away damaged cells at the same time with Alpha Hydroxy Acid gel if you're oily. If you're more on the dry side, this Alpha Hydroxy Acid serum brightens as well, without drying.
  5. Protect with a non-clogging, hydrating SPF.
Evening
Follow the same routine as above, but with minor changes:
Skip step 4 and replace your SPF with a nighttime moisturizer containing antioxidants, peptides or just hydrators, depending on your skin's specific needs.
